If you are on a budget, expect to pay around $100 a night for a room in a cheap hotel. However, unlike even the cheapest American hotel, your room may be tiny, there may be no TV, phone or alarm clock and the bathroom may be down the hall. Some cheaper hotels have no elevator, and the stairs can often be steep and narrow. French hotels are rated by a government star system, and the rating is based on several factors including room size and facilities.

Hotels can be found in all of the 20 arrondissements, or neighborhoods, of the city, and in general, the further away from the center you are, the cheaper the accommodation. Some good areas to find an inexpensive Paris hotels include Montmartre, the streets around the railway termini, and the area around Pere Lachaise cemetery.
